High Mountain Groove is the evolution of funky blues in the Kootenays. Formerly known as ‘High As Mountains’ this new mix of talent turns blues, rock & roll, reggae, funk and country into a blintz of groovy twangy shimmering thumping good fun.
HMG is a little like The Greatful Dead (not as sloppy), Big Sugar (not as loud), Otis Redding (not dead), and the Allman Brother (not as many drummers) with a little Bob Marley (no dreadlocks) and Fred Eaglesmith (no washboards) for good measure.
Howlin’ Dan (vocals and bass) and Todd Lester (drums and vocals) are the founding members, putting out tight, solid, rocking mostly original tunes & laying down a chunky foundation for the sweetness and fury of Morgan Real, guitar guru, harmonica monster (harmonister for short), and professional steel drum player, who adds tropical topping to his ice cream sundae of music.
What you get live with High Mountain Groove is deep feeling, excitement, and originality that goes into each performance.
‘What kind of music do they play?’ you ask. There is a prize for whomever actually comes up with something; it’s a question the band often asks and no one can seem to answer their sets are a mash of genres that make a profound and entertaining whole. “Blues and a whole lot of other stuff!” is as close as we can get!
Most songs are Howlin’ Dan originals and he likes all kinds of music – you can tell. It’s blues based except for the reggae, country, calypso, hard rock and funk. The boys, with their incredible depth of talent and spirit just make these songs their own & the energy and sincerity somehow make it all work!
